Hill Stations Near Varanasi: The Honest Answer (2026)

Short answer: there's no real hill station within a day's drive of Varanasi. The nearest one is Parasnath Hills in Jharkhand, about 404 km away, which is 8 to 9 hours on the road. What we do have, inside 70 km, is the northern edge of the Vindhya range: rocky green hills, gorges and waterfalls that make proper half-day or full-day trips.
We get asked this every April, usually by someone who's just stepped out of an air-conditioned hotel into 44 degrees. We run all of the trips below as fixed-fare private cabs. The close ones need nothing more than a car and a morning. A real hill station needs two days at the very least.
Hill escapes near Varanasi, by distance
| Destination | From Varanasi | Drive time | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lakhaniya Dari | 55 km | 1.5–2 hours | Waterfall and rock formations in the Vindhya hills, best in and just after the monsoon |
| Rajdari & Devdari (Chandauli) | 60 km | ~2 hours | Twin waterfalls inside Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary |
| Vindhyachal | 70 km | ~2 hours | Vindhya ridge plus the Vindhyavasini temple, hills and darshan in one trip |
| Chitrakoot | 280 km | ~6 hours | Forested hills and Ramayana sites, an overnight rather than a day trip |
| Parasnath Hills (Jharkhand) | 404 km | ~8.5 hours | The nearest genuine hill station, a Jain pilgrimage summit, 2 days minimum |
You pay per kilometre on our published rates: a Swift Dzire from ₹11/km, an Innova Crysta at ₹16/km, or a tempo traveller from ₹23/km. A 55 to 70 km round trip fits easily into one day, so we charge it as a local package, not an outstation booking. Get an exact figure for your group.
If you want a real hill station: plan two days
From April to June the city sits at 40 to 45°C, and honestly, by mid-May even the locals start talking about the mountains. If that's you, the thing to know is that the proper hill stations are a long way off. Nainital, the nearest of the Himalayan ones, is roughly 715 km by road. You're looking at a long day's drive, or an overnight one.
Why Plan a Hill Station Tour Visit from Varanasi?
Escape the Intense Summer Heat of the Plains
Up in Uttarakhand and Himachal, summer days sit somewhere around 15 to 25°C. That's twenty-odd degrees cooler than the ghats in May. Kids sleep properly, grandparents stop wilting, and nobody's arguing about the AC.
Combine Pilgrimage with Leisure and Relaxation
A lot of families do it in two halves. First the pilgrimage part here: darshan, a Ganga Aarti, a boat at dawn. Then they head north to put their feet up for a few days. Going from the crush of the old city lanes to a quiet, misty mountain road is quite something, and people tell us it's the part of the trip they talk about most once they're home.
Top Hill Stations to Explore When Leaving Varanasi
These are the ones our guests pick most often in summer. The distances are by road and the times are real driving times, with stops, not what the map app promises.
- Nainital (about 715 km, 13–14 hours): the lake town. You go boating on Naini Lake, wander the Mall Road and ride the cable car up to Snow View Point. Most of our groups leave in the evening and drive through the night.
- Ranikhet (about 750 km, 14–15 hours): quieter than Nainital, with long walks, a golf course and big Himalayan views. It's the pick if crowds put you off.
- Mussoorie (about 890 km, 15–16 hours): the "Queen of Hills", looking down over the Doon Valley, with Kempty Falls, Gun Hill and Lal Tibba. That's a full day and a night of driving, so we'd break it overnight somewhere on the way.
- Shimla (about 1,110 km, 19–20 hours): the old British summer capital, with the Ridge and the Mall Road. It's a two-day drive each way, so only take it on if you've got ten days or more.
Detailed Itineraries for Your Summer Escapes
Our advice is to keep the plan loose. Most hill station tour packages from here run five to eight days, and a big chunk of that is road time, so pick fewer places and stay a bit longer in each.
A Classic 5-Day Nainital Tour
Day 1, you set off in the evening and sleep through most of the drive. Day 2 is Naini Lake and the markets, nice and slow. On Day 3 we'd drive out to Mukteshwar for the Himalayan views. Day 4 is up to you; Kainchi Dham and the eco-cave gardens are both lovely. Then on Day 5 you head home.
The Extended Uttarakhand Exploration
Got more time? Put Nainital together with Jim Corbett for about eight days. That's two days of safari at Corbett, three in Nainital, and a couple of quiet ones in Ranikhet to finish. Corbett and Nainital are only a few hours apart, so it doesn't add much driving. People come back properly rested from this one.
Comfortable Outstation Travel with Varanasi on Wheels
On a trip this long, the car matters more than the hotel. You'll spend whole days in it, first on the highway and then on hairpin mountain roads. Our drivers do these routes every summer, and they know where to stop for food and where not to.
Tempo Travellers: Versatile Options for your Trip (₹23-30/km)
If there are more than six of you, a tempo traveller is the way to go. Everyone's in the same vehicle, and the antakshari starts somewhere around Lucknow.
- 12-seater (₹24/km): good for a small family, with room for a week's luggage.
- 17-seater (₹23/km): our most-booked vehicle for summer hill trips, the one extended families usually go for.
- 20-seater (₹24/km): a bit more room so nobody's squashed on the overnight leg.
- 26-seater (₹30/km): for big groups, office trips and family reunions.
Premium SUV Options for Smaller Families
Four to six of you? Take the Innova Crysta. It's comfortable over long distances, the suspension handles bad patches well, and it's small enough to get through the narrow lanes up in the hill towns, where a bigger vehicle can struggle.
Essential Packing Tips for Your Hill Station Trip
You'll be loading the car in 45 degrees and unloading it in 15, so pack a jacket or a sweater where you can reach it, not at the bottom of the bag. If anyone in the family gets carsick, bring tablets. The bends on the way up to Nainital or Mussoorie catch out a lot of people who've only driven on flat plains roads.
Good walking shoes are a must too. The ghats are flat, but the hill towns are all up and down. Throw in sunglasses and sunscreen, because the mountain sun is sharper than it feels, and bring a camera. You'll want pictures to put next to the ones from the river.
